What is sixteen pieces on a chessboard?

A chessboard is a square board divided into 64 squares of alternating colors, called "light" and "dark". On each side of the board, there are eight pawns placed on the second row from the player's side. In addition, there are eight pieces, which are placed on the first row and are arranged from the sides to the center of the board.

The pieces on a chessboard are as follows:

  • 2 rooks: shaped like towers and are placed in the corners of the board. They move vertically and horizontally (but not diagonally) any number of squares.
  • 2 knights: shaped like horses and are placed next to the rooks. They move in an L-shaped pattern, two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular to that direction.
  • 2 bishops: shaped like pointed hats and are placed next to the knights. They move diagonally any number of squares.
  • 1 queen: shaped like a crown and is placed on a square of its own color next to the king. The queen can move diagonally, horizontally, or vertically any number of squares.
  • 1 king: shaped like a crown with a cross on top and is placed on the square of its own color. The king can move one square in any direction.

Each player starts with 16 pieces, consisting of 8 pawns and 8 other pieces, and aims to capture the opponent's pieces and checkmate their opponent's king, while protecting their own pieces and king.
